What fits on your pellet grill?
Updated
Put in the main grate size and what you are cooking. The calculator lays the food out flat with an inch of space around each piece and tells you how many fit. Use the main grate only. The upper rack is too short for a brisket or a pork butt.
What fits on the main grate?
Grate defaults are the Traeger Pro 22 main grate. Food sizes are our typical estimates, so measure your own. We leave 1 inch between pieces so smoke and heat can move. Use the main grate only, not the upper rack.
What fits on the picks with a published grate
| Main grate | Whole packer briskets | Pork butts | Racks of spare ribs, flat | Whole chickens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traeger Pro 22 (22 x 19 in) | 1 | 4 | 3 | 4 |
| Green Mountain Trek Prime 2.0 (17.25 x 12.5 in) | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 |
Traeger gives the Traeger Woodridge rack 1 as an area, 520 sq in, without the width and depth. Area alone gives an upper limit: at most 6 pork butts or 2 briskets. That lines up with Traeger's own claim of 6 pork butts. The real number can be lower, because food does not bend to fill corners.
Maker claims vs what lies flat
Traeger says the Pro 22 fits 24 burgers, 5 racks of ribs or 4 whole chickens across its 572 sq in. On the main grate alone, with an inch between pieces, our math gives 16 burgers, 3 racks of spare ribs and 4 chickens. To get to 5 racks you would use a rib rack that stands them on edge, or the upper grate. Neither claim is wrong. They answer different questions.
The food sizes we assume
| Food | Our typical size |
|---|---|
| Whole packer brisket | 16 x 11 in |
| Pork butt | 8 x 8 in |
| Rack of spare ribs, lying flat | 15 x 6 in |
| Whole chicken | 10 x 7 in |
| Whole turkey, 12 to 14 lb | 14 x 11 in |
| 4 inch burger patty | 4 x 4 in |
These are our estimates for planning. A big packer brisket can be longer than 16 inches. Measure yours and type the real size in. If it is too long, many cooks trim the point or cut the brisket in two.
